SPK's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. But before making this announcement, SPK's earnings quite easily covered the dividend. The business is earning enough to make the dividend feasible, but the cash payout ratio of 90% shows that most of the cash is going back to the shareholders, which could constrain growth prospects going forward.

Over the next year, EPS could expand by 11.0% if recent trends continue. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 22% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

SPK Has A Solid Track Record

The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. Since 2014, the annual payment back then was ¥29.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ¥60.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 7.5% over that duration. Companies like this can be very valuable over the long term, if the decent rate of growth can be maintained.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. We are encouraged to see that SPK has grown earnings per share at 11% per year over the past five years. With a decent amount of growth and a low payout ratio, we think this bodes well for SPK's prospects of growing its dividend payments in the future.

In Summary

Overall, this is a reasonable dividend, and it being raised is an added bonus. However, lack of cash flows makes us wary of the potential for cuts in the dividend's future, even though the dividend is generally looking okay. Taking all of this into consideration, the dividend looks viable moving forward, but investors should be mindful that the company has pushed the boundaries of sustainability in the past and may do so again.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
