We Think Vector HOLDINGS (TSE:2656) Needs To Drive Business Growth Carefully

Even when a business is losing money, it's possible for shareholders to make money if they buy a good business at the right price. For example, biotech and mining exploration companies often lose money for years before finding success with a new treatment or mineral discovery. But the harsh reality is that very many loss making companies burn through all their cash and go bankrupt.

Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether Vector HOLDINGS (TSE:2656) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. For the purposes of this article, cash burn is the annual rate at which an unprofitable company spends cash to fund its growth; its negative free cash flow. The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

When Might Vector HOLDINGS Run Out Of Money?

A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. As at September 2025, Vector HOLDINGS had cash of JP¥247m and no debt. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through JP¥407m. That means it had a cash runway of around 7 months as of September 2025. That's quite a short cash runway, indicating the company must either reduce its annual cash burn or replenish its cash. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.

How Is Vector HOLDINGS' Cash Burn Changing Over Time?

In our view, Vector HOLDINGS doesn't yet produce significant amounts of operating revenue, since it reported just JP¥153m in the last twelve months. Therefore, for the purposes of this analysis we'll focus on how the cash burn is tracking. Given the length of the cash runway, we'd interpret the 45% reduction in cash burn, in twelve months, as prudent if not necessary for capital preservation. Vector HOLDINGS makes us a little nervous due to its lack of substantial operating revenue. We prefer most of the stocks on this list of stocks that analysts expect to grow.

How Hard Would It Be For Vector HOLDINGS To Raise More Cash For Growth?

While Vector HOLDINGS is showing a solid reduction in its cash burn, it's still worth considering how easily it could raise more cash, even just to fuel faster growth. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.

Vector HOLDINGS has a market capitalisation of JP¥3.4b and burnt through JP¥407m last year, which is 12% of the company's market value. As a result, we'd venture that the company could raise more cash for growth without much trouble, albeit at the cost of some dilution.

How Risky Is Vector HOLDINGS' Cash Burn Situation?

Even though its cash runway makes us a little nervous, we are compelled to mention that we thought Vector HOLDINGS' cash burn reduction was relatively promising.
