The board of Sun Frontier Fudousan Co., Ltd. (TSE:8934) has announced that it will pay a dividend of ¥33.00 per share on the 26th of June. This takes the dividend yield to 3.4%, which shareholders will be pleased with.

Sun Frontier Fudousan's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Based on the last payment, Sun Frontier Fudousan was earning enough to cover the dividend, but free cash flows weren't positive. With the company not bringing in any cash, paying out to shareholders is bound to become difficult at some point.

Over the next year, EPS could expand by 0.5% if recent trends continue. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 36% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Sun Frontier Fudousan Has A Solid Track Record

The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ¥14.00 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of ¥66.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 17% per annum over that time. It is good to see that there has been strong dividend growth, and that there haven't been any cuts for a long time.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve

Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. Although it's important to note that Sun Frontier Fudousan's earnings per share has basically not grown from where it was five years ago, which could erode the purchasing power of the dividend over time. While EPS growth is quite low, Sun Frontier Fudousan has the option to increase the payout ratio to return more cash to shareholders.

Our Thoughts On Sun Frontier Fudousan's Dividend

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
