Market Might Still Lack Some Conviction On Meiho Enterprise Co., Ltd. (TSE:8927) Even After 27% Share Price Boost
Despite an already strong run, Meiho Enterprise Co., Ltd. (TSE:8927) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 27% in the last thirty days. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 72% in the last year.
Even after such a large jump in price, Meiho Enterprise's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 6.7x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the market in Japan, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 15x and even P/E's above 24x are quite common. However, the P/E might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Recent times have been quite advantageous for Meiho Enterprise as its earnings have been rising very briskly. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as Meiho Enterprise's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 95% gain to the company's bottom line. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 243% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 11% shows it's noticeably more attractive on an annualised basis.
In light of this, it's peculiar that Meiho Enterprise's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Final Word
Even after such a strong price move, Meiho Enterprise's P/E still trails the rest of the market significantly. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our examination of Meiho Enterprise revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
