LeTech Corporation's (TSE:3497) 34% Dip In Price Shows Sentiment Is Matching Revenues
LeTech Corporation (TSE:3497) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 34% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 20% in that time.
Since its price has dipped substantially, it would be understandable if you think LeTech is a stock with good investment prospects with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 0.3x, considering almost half the companies in Japan's Real Estate industry have P/S ratios above 0.9x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Has LeTech Performed Recently?
For example, consider that LeTech's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, LeTech would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 14%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 40% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 7.0% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.
With this information, we are not surprised that LeTech is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.
What Does LeTech's P/S Mean For Investors?
LeTech's recently weak share price has pulled its P/S back below other Real Estate companies. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of LeTech revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term is contributing to its low P/S, given the industry is set to grow. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Given the current circumstances, it seems unlikely that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.
