STrust Co.,Ltd.'s (TSE:3280) investors are due to receive a payment of ¥12.00 per share on 26th of May. This will take the annual payment to 3.5% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

STrustLtd's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings

While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Prior to this announcement, STrustLtd's earnings easily covered the dividend, but free cash flows were negative. We think that cash flows should take priority over earnings, so this is definitely a worry for the dividend going forward.

If the trend of the last few years continues, EPS will grow by 2.9% over the next 12 months. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 17% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

STrustLtd Has A Solid Track Record

The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from ¥8.00 total annually to ¥24.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 12% per annum over that time. Rapidly growing dividends for a long time is a very valuable feature for an income stock.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Earnings have grown at around 2.9% a year for the past five years, which isn't massive but still better than seeing them shrink. Earnings growth is slow, but on the plus side, the dividend payout ratio is low and dividends could grow faster than earnings, if the company decides to increase its payout ratio.

Our Thoughts On STrustLtd's Dividend

In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think STrustLtd's payments are rock solid. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
