LANDNET (TSE:2991) Posted Healthy Earnings But There Are Some Other Factors To Be Aware Of
LANDNET Inc.'s (TSE:2991) stock was strong after they recently reported robust earnings. We did some analysis and think that investors are missing some details hidden beneath the profit numbers.
A Closer Look At LANDNET's Earnings
Many investors haven't heard of the accrual ratio from cashflow, but it is actually a useful measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow (FCF) during a given period. The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
Over the twelve months to July 2025, LANDNET recorded an accrual ratio of 0.35. Therefore, we know that it's free cashflow was significantly lower than its statutory profit, raising questions about how useful that profit figure really is. Even though it reported a profit of JP¥2.38b, a look at free cash flow indicates it actually burnt through JP¥5.0b in the last year. Coming off the back of negative free cash flow last year, we imagine some shareholders might wonder if its cash burn of JP¥5.0b, this year, indicates high risk.

Our Take On LANDNET's Profit Performance
As we have made quite clear, we're a bit worried that LANDNET didn't back up the last year's profit with free cashflow. For this reason, we think that LANDNET's statutory profits may be a bad guide to its underlying earnings power, and might give investors an overly positive impression of the company. But the good news is that its EPS growth over the last three years has been very impressive. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly. With this in mind, we wouldn't consider investing in a stock unless we had a thorough understanding of the risks. Every company has risks, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for LANDNET you should know about.
Today we've zoomed in on a single data point to better understand the nature of LANDNET's profit. But there is always more to discover if you are capable of focussing your mind on minutiae.
