Ichigo Inc. (TSE:2337) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 27th of May to ¥10.00. This takes the annual payment to 2.8% of the current stock price, which is about average for the industry.

Ichigo's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
Solid dividend yields are great, but they only really help us if the payment is sustainable. Ichigo is quite easily earning enough to cover the dividend, however it is being let down by weak cash flows. In general, we consider cash flow to be more important than earnings, so we would be cautious about relying on the sustainability of this dividend.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 10.2%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 39% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Ichigo Has A Solid Track Record
The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥1.10 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥10.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 25% a year over that time. Rapidly growing dividends for a long time is a very valuable feature for an income stock.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Come By
Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Let's not jump to conclusions as things might not be as good as they appear on the surface. Over the past five years, it looks as though Ichigo's EPS has declined at around 6.8% a year. If earnings continue declining, the company may have to make the difficult choice of reducing the dividend or even stopping it completely - the opposite of dividend growth. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited.
In Summary
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We don't think Ichigo is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
