These days it's easy to simply buy an index fund, and your returns should (roughly) match the market. But investors can boost returns by picking market-beating companies to own shares in. For example, the Bushiroad Inc. (TSE:7803) share price is up 50% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market decline of around 6.5% (not including dividends). So that should have shareholders smiling. Zooming out, the stock is actually down 35% in the last three years.

Since the stock has added JP¥3.7b to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Bushiroad was able to grow EPS by 67% in the last twelve months. This EPS growth is significantly higher than the 50% increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market isn't as excited about Bushiroad as it was before. This could be an opportunity.

The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Bushiroad shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 52% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 7% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
