Why We're Not Concerned Yet About unerry,Inc.'s (TSE:5034) 32% Share Price Plunge

Published
TSE:5034

unerry,Inc. (TSE:5034) shares have had a horrible month, losing 32% after a relatively good period beforehand. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 55% share price decline.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, given close to half the companies in Japan have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 13x, you may still consider unerryInc as a stock to avoid entirely with its 74.1x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.

With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, unerryInc has been doing relatively well. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Enough Growth For unerryInc?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as unerryInc's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 107%. Although, its longer-term performance hasn't been as strong with three-year EPS growth being relatively non-existent overall. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 149% during the coming year according to the two analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 9.8%, which is noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that unerryInc's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Final Word

unerryInc's shares may have retreated, but its P/E is still flying high. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of unerryInc's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
