GMO internet (TSE:4784) Is Looking To Continue Growing Its Returns On Capital
To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So when we looked at GMO internet (TSE:4784) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on GMO internet is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.17 = JP¥3.5b ÷ (JP¥49b - JP¥29b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2025).
So, GMO internet has an ROCE of 17%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 11% generated by the Media industry.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
GMO internet is displaying some positive trends. Over the last five years, returns on capital employed have risen substantially to 17%. The company is effectively making more money per dollar of capital used, and it's worth noting that the amount of capital has increased too, by 246%. This can indicate that there's plenty of opportunities to invest capital internally and at ever higher rates, a combination that's common among multi-baggers.
On a side note, we noticed that the improvement in ROCE appears to be partly fueled by an increase in current liabilities. Essentially the business now has suppliers or short-term creditors funding about 58% of its operations, which isn't ideal. And with current liabilities at those levels, that's pretty high.
Our Take On GMO internet's ROCE
A company that is growing its returns on capital and can consistently reinvest in itself is a highly sought after trait, and that's what GMO internet has. And with the stock having performed exceptionally well over the last five years, these patterns are being accounted for by investors. Therefore, we think it would be worth your time to check if these trends are going to continue.
