Amazia, inc. (TSE:4424) Surges 37% Yet Its Low P/S Is No Reason For Excitement
The Amazia, inc. (TSE:4424) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 37%. Notwithstanding the latest gain, the annual share price return of 5.4% isn't as impressive.
Although its price has surged higher, considering around half the companies operating in Japan's Interactive Media and Services industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.7x, you may still consider Amaziainc as an solid investment opportunity with its 0.9x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Amaziainc Has Been Performing
For instance, Amaziainc's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. Perhaps the market believes the recent revenue performance isn't good enough to keep up the industry, causing the P/S ratio to suffer. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Amaziainc's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 28%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 48% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 10% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.
With this information, we are not surprised that Amaziainc is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
What We Can Learn From Amaziainc's P/S?
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Amaziainc's P/S close to the industry median. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of Amaziainc revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term is contributing to its low P/S, given the industry is set to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
