Even after rising 11% this past week, HEROZ (TSE:4382) shareholders are still down 68% over the past five years
While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the HEROZ, Inc. (TSE:4382) share price up 22% in a single quarter. But don't envy holders -- looking back over 5 years the returns have been really bad. Indeed, the share price is down 68% in the period. So is the recent increase sufficient to restore confidence in the stock? Not yet. However, in the best case scenario (far from fait accompli), this improved performance might be sustained.
On a more encouraging note the company has added JP¥1.7b to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the five-year loss for shareholders.
Given that HEROZ didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

A Different Perspective
Investors in HEROZ had a tough year, with a total loss of 15%, against a market gain of about 4.6%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 11% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
