There's Reason For Concern Over Sharingtechnology, Inc.'s (TSE:3989) Massive 25% Price Jump
Sharingtechnology, Inc. (TSE:3989) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 25% after a shaky period beforehand. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 95%.
After such a large jump in price, Sharingtechnology may be sending bearish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 18.7x, since almost half of all companies in Japan have P/E ratios under 14x and even P/E's lower than 9x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Recent times have been advantageous for Sharingtechnology as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is Sharingtechnology's Growth Trending?
Sharingtechnology's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 13% gain to the company's bottom line. Although, the latest three year period in total hasn't been as good as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the sole analyst covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 7.1% per year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 8.8% per year, which is not materially different.
With this information, we find it interesting that Sharingtechnology is trading at a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
What We Can Learn From Sharingtechnology's P/E?
Sharingtechnology's P/E is getting right up there since its shares have risen strongly. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
Our examination of Sharingtechnology's analyst forecasts revealed that its market-matching earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E as much as we would have predicted. When we see an average earnings outlook with market-like growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless these conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
