Beaglee Inc.'s (TSE:3981) Shares Leap 27% Yet They're Still Not Telling The Full Story
The Beaglee Inc. (TSE:3981) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 27%. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 48%.
Even after such a large jump in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Beaglee's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 12.4x is worth a mention when the median P/E in Japan is similar at about 14x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/E without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.
The recent earnings growth at Beaglee would have to be considered satisfactory if not spectacular. One possibility is that the P/E is moderate because investors think this good earnings growth might only be parallel to the broader market in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Beaglee would need to produce growth that's similar to the market.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 6.5%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 64% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Comparing that to the market, which is only predicted to deliver 13% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
With this information, we find it interesting that Beaglee is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance is at its limits and have been accepting lower selling prices.
What We Can Learn From Beaglee's P/E?
Beaglee's stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/E level with the market. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Beaglee currently trades on a lower than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider market forecast. There could be some unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.
