Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Synchro Food Co., Ltd. (TSE:3963) share price has dived 26% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 44% in that time.

Although its price has dipped substantially, it's still not a stretch to say that Synchro Food's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 15x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the market in Japan, where the median P/E ratio is around 13x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/E ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

Synchro Food has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings at a solid pace. It might be that many expect the respectable earnings performance to wane, which has kept the P/E from rising. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders probably aren't too pessimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Some Growth For Synchro Food?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the market for P/E ratios like Synchro Food's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 12% gain to the company's bottom line. Although, the latest three year period in total hasn't been as good as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 9.8% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

In light of this, it's curious that Synchro Food's P/E sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as a continuation of recent earnings trends is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.

What We Can Learn From Synchro Food's P/E?

Synchro Food's plummeting stock price has brought its P/E right back to the rest of the market. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

Our examination of Synchro Food revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't impacting its P/E as much as we would have predicted, given they look worse than current market expectations. When we see weak earnings with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the moderate P/E lower. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
