We Like ZIGExN's (TSE:3679) Earnings For More Than Just Statutory Profit
ZIGExN Co., Ltd.'s (TSE:3679) recent earnings report didn't offer any surprises, with the shares unchanged over the last week. We did some digging, and we think that investors are missing some encouraging factors in the underlying numbers.
We check all companies for important risks. See what we found for ZIGExN in our free report.A Closer Look At ZIGExN's Earnings
In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.
Over the twelve months to March 2025, ZIGExN recorded an accrual ratio of -0.23. Therefore, its statutory earnings were very significantly less than its free cashflow. To wit, it produced free cash flow of JP¥6.0b during the period, dwarfing its reported profit of JP¥3.87b. ZIGExN's year-on-year free cash flow was as flat as two-day-old fizzy drink.

Our Take On ZIGExN's Profit Performance
As we discussed above, ZIGExN's accrual ratio indicates strong conversion of profit to free cash flow, which is a positive for the company. Because of this, we think ZIGExN's underlying earnings potential is as good as, or possibly even better, than the statutory profit makes it seem! Better yet, its EPS are growing strongly, which is nice to see. Of course, we've only just scratched the surface when it comes to analysing its earnings; one could also consider margins, forecast growth, and return on investment, among other factors. Obviously, we love to consider the historical data to inform our opinion of a company. But it can be really valuable to consider what other analysts are forecasting.
