The board of Kakaku.com, Inc. (TSE:2371) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ¥55.00 on the 20th of June, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This will take the annual payment to 2.8% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Kakaku.com's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Based on the last payment, Kakaku.com was quite comfortably earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

Earnings per share is forecast to rise by 11.1% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, our estimates say the payout ratio could reach 76% - on the higher side, but we wouldn't necessarily say this is unsustainable.

Kakaku.com Has A Solid Track Record

The company has been paying a dividend for a long time, and it has been quite stable which gives us confidence in the future dividend potential. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥12.50 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥60.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 17% per annum over that time. We can see that payments have shown some very nice upward momentum without faltering, which provides some reassurance that future payments will also be reliable.

The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Earnings per share has been crawling upwards at 3.1% per year. The company has been growing at a pretty soft 3.1% per annum, and is paying out quite a lot of its earnings to shareholders. This isn't bad in itself, but unless earnings growth pick up we wouldn't expect dividends to grow either.

We Really Like Kakaku.com's Dividend

Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Kakaku.com is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. The company is easily earning enough to cover its dividend payments and it is great to see that these earnings are being translated into cash flow. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. Earnings growth generally bodes well for the future value of company dividend payments.
