Mino Ceramic (TSE:5356) sheds 13% this week, as yearly returns fall more in line with earnings growth
The Mino Ceramic Co., Ltd. (TSE:5356) share price has had a bad week, falling 13%. But that doesn't change the fact that shareholders have received really good returns over the last five years. In fact, the share price is 185% higher today. Generally speaking the long term returns will give you a better idea of business quality than short periods can. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it's cheap now.
Although Mino Ceramic has shed JP¥1.8b from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Over half a decade, Mino Ceramic managed to grow its earnings per share at 6.6% a year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 23% per year, over the same period. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Mino Ceramic, it has a TSR of 248% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Mino Ceramic shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 46% over one year. That's including the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 28% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
