Kuraray (TSE:3405) Is Paying Out A Dividend Of ¥27.00

The board of Kuraray Co., Ltd. (TSE:3405) has announced that it will pay a dividend of ¥27.00 per share on the 30th of March. The dividend yield will be 3.5% based on this payment which is still above the industry average.

Kuraray's Future Dividends May Potentially Be At Risk

If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Based on the last payment, Kuraray's profits didn't cover the dividend, but the company was generating enough cash instead. Given that the dividend is a cash outflow, we think that cash is more important than accounting measures of profit when assessing the dividend, so this is a mitigating factor.

The next 12 months is set to see EPS grow by 37.7%. However, if the dividend continues along recent trends, it could start putting pressure on the balance sheet with the payout ratio reaching 156% over the next year.

Kuraray Has A Solid Track Record

The company has been paying a dividend for a long time, and it has been quite stable which gives us confidence in the future dividend potential. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from ¥36.00 total annually to ¥54.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 4.1% a year over that time. While the consistency in the dividend payments is impressive, we think the relatively slow rate of growth is less attractive.

Kuraray Might Find It Hard To Grow Its Dividend

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Kuraray has impressed us by growing EPS at 15% per year over the past five years. Although per-share earnings are growing at a credible rate, the massive payout ratio may limit growth in the company's future dividend payments.

Our Thoughts On Kuraray's Dividend

Overall, it's nice to see a consistent dividend payment, but we think that longer term, the current level of payment might be unsustainable. The company is generating plenty of cash, but we still think the dividend is a bit high for comfort. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
