On average, over time, stock markets tend to rise higher. This makes investing attractive. But if when you choose to buy stocks, some of them will be below average performers. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the SE Corporation (TYO:3423) share price is up 27% in the last year, that falls short of the market return. Zooming out, the stock is actually down 16% in the last three years.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the last year, SE actually saw its earnings per share drop 7.8%.
So we don't think that investors are paying too much attention to EPS. Indeed, when EPS is declining but the share price is up, it often means the market is considering other factors.
Revenue was pretty flat year on year, but maybe a closer look at the data can explain the market optimism.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for SE the TSR over the last year was 32%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
SE provided a TSR of 32% over the last twelve months. But that was short of the market average. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it's actually better than the average return of 4% over half a decade It is possible that returns will improve along with the business fundamentals. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand SE better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 4 warning signs for SE you should know about.
