Subdued Growth No Barrier To Waqoo Inc. (TSE:4937) With Shares Advancing 28%
Despite an already strong run, Waqoo Inc. (TSE:4937) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 28% in the last thirty days. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 29% in the last year.
After such a large jump in price, you could be forgiven for thinking Waqoo is a stock to steer clear of with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 3.4x, considering almost half the companies in Japan's Personal Products industry have P/S ratios below 1.2x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

What Does Waqoo's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
We'd have to say that with no tangible growth over the last year, Waqoo's revenue has been unimpressive. Perhaps the market believes that revenue growth will improve markedly over current levels, inflating the P/S ratio. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as Waqoo's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.
If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. The lack of growth did nothing to help the company's aggregate three-year performance, which is an unsavory 33% drop in revenue. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 3.5% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.
In light of this, it's alarming that Waqoo's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
The Bottom Line On Waqoo's P/S
Waqoo's P/S has grown nicely over the last month thanks to a handy boost in the share price. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Our examination of Waqoo revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term isn't resulting in a P/S as low as we expected, given the industry is set to grow. With a revenue decline on investors' minds, the likelihood of a souring sentiment is quite high which could send the P/S back in line with what we'd expect. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, investors will have a hard time accepting the share price as fair value.
And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Waqoo (of which 1 is a bit concerning!) you should know about.
