JMDC Inc.'s (TSE:4483) Share Price Is Still Matching Investor Opinion Despite 26% Slump
The JMDC Inc. (TSE:4483) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 26%. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 19% share price drop.
Although its price has dipped substantially, given close to half the companies in Japan have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 12x, you may still consider JMDC as a stock to avoid entirely with its 43.9x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
JMDC could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this poor earnings performance will turn the corner. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is JMDC's Growth Trending?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as JMDC's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 22%. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 21% overall rise in EPS. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 40% each year during the coming three years according to the analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 9.2% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that JMDC's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
