Tokyo Century (TSE:8439) Will Pay A Larger Dividend Than Last Year At ¥34.00
The board of Tokyo Century Corporation (TSE:8439) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ¥34.00 on the 3rd of December, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This takes the dividend yield to 3.7%, which shareholders will be pleased with.
Tokyo Century's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Before making this announcement, Tokyo Century was paying a whopping 99% as a dividend, but this only made up 36% of its overall earnings. The business might be trying to strike a balance between returning cash to shareholders and reinvesting back into the business, but this high of a payout ratio could definitely force the dividend to be cut if the company runs into a bit of a tough spot.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 7.7%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 40%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Tokyo Century Has A Solid Track Record
The company has been paying a dividend for a long time, and it has been quite stable which gives us confidence in the future dividend potential. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was ¥16.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ¥68.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 16% per annum over that time. So, dividends have been growing pretty quickly, and even more impressively, they haven't experienced any notable falls during this period.
The Dividend Has Growth Potential
Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. It's encouraging to see that Tokyo Century has been growing its earnings per share at 6.0% a year over the past five years. Tokyo Century definitely has the potential to grow its dividend in the future with earnings on an uptrend and a low payout ratio.
In Summary
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
