Poplar's (TSE:7601) Anemic Earnings Might Be Worse Than You Think
Investors were disappointed by Poplar Co., Ltd.'s (TSE:7601 ) latest earnings release. We did some further digging and think they have a few more reasons to be concerned beyond the statutory profit.
Zooming In On Poplar's Earnings
One key financial ratio used to measure how well a company converts its profit to free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio. To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. You could think of the accrual ratio from cashflow as the 'non-FCF profit ratio'.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
Poplar has an accrual ratio of 0.23 for the year to February 2025. Therefore, we know that it's free cashflow was significantly lower than its statutory profit, which is hardly a good thing. In fact, it had free cash flow of JP¥343m in the last year, which was a lot less than its statutory profit of JP¥376.0m. At this point we should mention that Poplar did manage to increase its free cash flow in the last twelve months Having said that, there is more to the story. We can see that unusual items have impacted its statutory profit, and therefore the accrual ratio.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
Given the accrual ratio, it's not overly surprising that Poplar's profit was boosted by unusual items worth JP¥51m in the last twelve months. While it's always nice to have higher profit, a large contribution from unusual items sometimes dampens our enthusiasm. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. Which is hardly surprising, given the name. If Poplar doesn't see that contribution repeat, then all else being equal we'd expect its profit to drop over the current year.
Our Take On Poplar's Profit Performance
Summing up, Poplar received a nice boost to profit from unusual items, but could not match its paper profit with free cash flow. For the reasons mentioned above, we think that a perfunctory glance at Poplar's statutory profits might make it look better than it really is on an underlying level. In light of this, if you'd like to do more analysis on the company, it's vital to be informed of the risks involved. Be aware that Poplar is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis and 1 of those is significant...
Our examination of Poplar has focussed on certain factors that can make its earnings look better than they are. And, on that basis, we are somewhat skeptical. But there is always more to discover if you are capable of focussing your mind on minutiae. For example, many people consider a high return on equity as an indication of favorable business economics, while others like to 'follow the money' and search out stocks that insiders are buying. While it might take a little research on your behalf, you may find this free collection of companies boasting high return on equity, or this list of stocks with significant insider holdings to be useful.
