The board of TOA Corporation (TSE:6809) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 3rd of December, with investors receiving ¥20.00 per share. This means the annual payment is 4.0% of the current stock price, which is above the average for the industry.

TOA's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions

We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Prior to this announcement, TOA's dividend made up quite a large proportion of earnings but only 25% of free cash flows. This leaves plenty of cash for reinvestment into the business.

If the trend of the last few years continues, EPS will grow by 5.2% over the next 12 months. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 52% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

TOA Has A Solid Track Record

Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was ¥20.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ¥40.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 7.2% over that duration. Dividends have grown at a reasonable rate over this period, and without any major cuts in the payment over time, we think this is an attractive combination as it provides a nice boost to shareholder returns.

TOA Could Grow Its Dividend

Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. TOA has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 5.2% per annum. Recently, the company has been able to grow earnings at a decent rate, but with the payout ratio on the higher end we don't think the dividend has many prospects for growth.

TOA Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock

Overall, we like to see the dividend staying consistent, and we think TOA might even raise payments in the future. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
