There's Reason For Concern Over Sharp Corporation's (TSE:6753) Price

There wouldn't be many who think Sharp Corporation's (TSE:6753) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x is worth a mention when the median P/S for the Consumer Durables industry in Japan is similar at about 0.4x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

Sharp's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 8.7% decrease to the company's top line. At least revenue has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 0.3% each year as estimated by the ten analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 1.7% each year, which paints a poor picture.

In light of this, it's somewhat alarming that Sharp's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as these declining revenues are likely to weigh on the share price eventually.
