The board of TOPPAN Holdings Inc. (TSE:7911) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 2nd of December, with investors receiving ¥28.00 per share. This takes the annual payment to 1.4% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

TOPPAN Holdings' Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. Based on the last payment, TOPPAN Holdings was earning enough to cover the dividend, but free cash flows weren't positive. With the company not bringing in any cash, paying out to shareholders is bound to become difficult at some point.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 12.2%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 18% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

TOPPAN Holdings Has A Solid Track Record

The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from ¥36.00 total annually to ¥56.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 4.5% a year over that time. Dividends have grown relatively slowly, which is not great, but some investors may value the relative consistency of the dividend.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve

Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. Earnings per share has been crawling upwards at 3.5% per year. While growth may be thin on the ground, TOPPAN Holdings could always pay out a higher proportion of earnings to increase shareholder returns.

In Summary

Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think TOPPAN Holdings will make a great income stock. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We don't think TOPPAN Holdings is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
