Weak Statutory Earnings May Not Tell The Whole Story For Nexyz. Group (TSE:4346)
A lackluster earnings announcement from Nexyz. Group Corporation (TSE:4346) last week didn't sink the stock price. Our analysis suggests that along with soft profit numbers, investors should be aware of some other underlying weaknesses in the numbers.

Examining Cashflow Against Nexyz. Group's Earnings
In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.
Over the twelve months to March 2024, Nexyz. Group recorded an accrual ratio of -0.18. That implies it has very good cash conversion, and that its earnings in the last year actually significantly understate its free cash flow. Indeed, in the last twelve months it reported free cash flow of JP¥1.0b, well over the JP¥367.0m it reported in profit. Nexyz. Group did see its free cash flow drop year on year, which is less than ideal, like a Simpson's episode without Groundskeeper Willie. However, that's not all there is to consider. The accrual ratio is reflecting the impact of unusual items on statutory profit, at least in part.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
Surprisingly, given Nexyz. Group's accrual ratio implied strong cash conversion, its paper profit was actually boosted by JP¥476m in unusual items. We can't deny that higher profits generally leave us optimistic, but we'd prefer it if the profit were to be sustainable. We ran the numbers on most publicly listed companies worldwide, and it's very common for unusual items to be once-off in nature. And that's as you'd expect, given these boosts are described as 'unusual'. Nexyz. Group had a rather significant contribution from unusual items relative to its profit to March 2024. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items are making its statutory profit significantly stronger than it would otherwise be.
Our Take On Nexyz. Group's Profit Performance
In conclusion, Nexyz. Group's accrual ratio suggests its statutory earnings are of good quality, but on the other hand the profits were boosted by unusual items. Having considered these factors, we don't think Nexyz. Group's statutory profits give an overly harsh view of the business. If you'd like to know more about Nexyz.
