Altech Co., Ltd. (TSE:9972) Stock's 34% Dive Might Signal An Opportunity But It Requires Some Scrutiny
Altech Co., Ltd. (TSE:9972) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 34% share price drop in the last month. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 22% share price drop.
Although its price has dipped substantially, it's still not a stretch to say that Altech's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Trade Distributors industry in Japan, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.3x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How Has Altech Performed Recently?
Altech has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue at a solid pace. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to only keep up with the broader industry, which has keeping the P/S in line with expectations. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders probably aren't too pessimistic about the future direction of the share price.
We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Altech's earnings, revenue and cash flow.Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For Altech?
The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Altech's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 21%. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 49% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
When compared to the industry's one-year growth forecast of 2.2%, the most recent medium-term revenue trajectory is noticeably more alluring
With this information, we find it interesting that Altech is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance is at its limits and have been accepting lower selling prices.
The Bottom Line On Altech's P/S
Altech's plummeting stock price has brought its P/S back to a similar region as the rest of the industry. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
To our surprise, Altech revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't contributing to its P/S as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. It'd be fair to assume that potential risks the company faces could be the contributing factor to the lower than expected P/S. While recent revenue trends over the past medium-term suggest that the risk of a price decline is low, investors appear to see the likelihood of revenue fluctuations in the future.
