Tadano Ltd. (TSE:6395) Stock's 28% Dive Might Signal An Opportunity But It Requires Some Scrutiny
Tadano Ltd. (TSE:6395) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 28% share price drop in the last month. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 20% share price drop.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Tadano's P/E ratio of 12x, since the median price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio in Japan is also close to 13x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/E.
With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Tadano has been doing relatively well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to wane, which has kept the P/E from rising. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Tadano's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the market.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 136%. Still, EPS has barely risen at all from three years ago in total, which is not ideal. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the five analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 15% each year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 9.6% each year growth forecast for the broader market.
With this information, we find it interesting that Tadano is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.
The Bottom Line On Tadano's P/E
With its share price falling into a hole, the P/E for Tadano looks quite average now. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that Tadano currently trades on a lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is higher than the wider market. When we see a strong earnings outlook with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.
