Sekisui Jushi Corporation's (TSE:4212) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to ¥35.00 on 2nd of December. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 2.9%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Sekisui Jushi's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Before making this announcement, Sekisui Jushi was earning enough to cover the dividend, but it wasn't generating any free cash flows. No cash flows could definitely make returning cash to shareholders difficult, or at least mean the balance sheet will come under pressure.

Unless the company can turn things around, EPS could fall by 1.8% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could be 51%, which we consider to be quite comfortable, with most of the company's earnings left over to grow the business in the future.

Sekisui Jushi Has A Solid Track Record

The company has been paying a dividend for a long time, and it has been quite stable which gives us confidence in the future dividend potential. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from ¥26.00 total annually to ¥70.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 10% per annum over that time. We can see that payments have shown some very nice upward momentum without faltering, which provides some reassurance that future payments will also be reliable.

Sekisui Jushi May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Unfortunately things aren't as good as they seem. Sekisui Jushi hasn't seen much change in its earnings per share over the last five years.

In Summary

In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Sekisui Jushi's payments are rock solid. While Sekisui Jushi is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
