The board of TS TECH Co., Ltd. (TSE:7313) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ¥40.00 on the 27th of November, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This makes the dividend yield 4.2%, which is above the industry average.

TS TECH's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Prior to this announcement, the company was paying out 111% of what it was earning, however the dividend was quite comfortably covered by free cash flows at a cash payout ratio of only 50%. Given that the dividend is a cash outflow, we think that cash is more important than accounting measures of profit when assessing the dividend, so this is a mitigating factor.

EPS is set to grow by 29.1% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, our estimates say the payout ratio could reach 82% - on the higher side, but we wouldn't necessarily say this is unsustainable.

TS TECH Has A Solid Track Record

The company has been paying a dividend for a long time, and it has been quite stable which gives us confidence in the future dividend potential. Since 2014, the annual payment back then was ¥24.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ¥83.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 13% per annum over that time. So, dividends have been growing pretty quickly, and even more impressively, they haven't experienced any notable falls during this period.

Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky

The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. However, things aren't all that rosy. TS TECH's earnings per share has shrunk at 16% a year over the past five years. Such rapid declines definitely have the potential to constrain dividend payments if the trend continues into the future. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited.

Our Thoughts On TS TECH's Dividend

In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think TS TECH's payments are rock solid. The company has been bring in plenty of cash to cover the dividend, but we don't necessarily think that makes it a great dividend stock. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
