We Don’t Think Ogura ClutchLtd's (TSE:6408) Earnings Should Make Shareholders Too Comfortable
Shareholders didn't seem to be thrilled with Ogura Clutch Co.,Ltd.'s (TSE:6408) recent earnings report, despite healthy profit numbers. Our analysis has found some concerning factors which weaken the profit's foundation.
How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?
For anyone who wants to understand Ogura ClutchLtd's profit beyond the statutory numbers, it's important to note that during the last twelve months statutory profit gained from JP¥243m worth of unusual items. We can't deny that higher profits generally leave us optimistic, but we'd prefer it if the profit were to be sustainable. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And that's as you'd expect, given these boosts are described as 'unusual'. We can see that Ogura ClutchLtd's positive unusual items were quite significant relative to its profit in the year to September 2025. All else being equal, this would likely have the effect of making the statutory profit a poor guide to underlying earnings power.

An Unusual Tax Situation
Having already discussed the impact of the unusual items, we should also note that Ogura ClutchLtd received a tax benefit of JP¥230m. It's always a bit noteworthy when a company is paid by the tax man, rather than paying the tax man. Of course, prima facie it's great to receive a tax benefit. And given that it lost money last year, it seems possible that the benefit is evidence that it now expects to find value in its past tax losses. However, our data indicates that tax benefits can temporarily boost statutory profit in the year it is booked, but subsequently profit may fall back. Assuming the tax benefit is not repeated every year, we could see its profitability drop noticeably, all else being equal.
Our Take On Ogura ClutchLtd's Profit Performance
In its last report Ogura ClutchLtd received a tax benefit which might make its profit look better than it really is on a underlying level. Furthermore, it also benefitted from a positive unusual item, which boosted the profit result even higher. Considering all this we'd argue Ogura ClutchLtd's profits probably give an overly generous impression of its sustainable level of profitability. In light of this, if you'd like to do more analysis on the company, it's vital to be informed of the risks involved.
