Shareholders Should Be Pleased With Alerion Clean Power S.p.A.'s (BIT:ARN) Price
With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 26.4x Alerion Clean Power S.p.A. (BIT:ARN) may be sending very bearish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in Italy have P/E ratios under 14x and even P/E's lower than 9x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, Alerion Clean Power's earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this poor earnings performance will turn the corner. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Alerion Clean Power's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 56% decrease to the company's bottom line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 24% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the sole analyst covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 23% per annum over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 14% per year growth forecast for the broader market.
In light of this, it's understandable that Alerion Clean Power's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
The Bottom Line On Alerion Clean Power's P/E
Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Alerion Clean Power maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Alerion Clean Power (at least 2 which are significant), and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
