The board of ENAV S.p.A. (BIT:ENAV) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of €0.1967 on the 25th of October, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This takes the dividend yield to 5.4%, which shareholders will be pleased with.

ENAV's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, the company was paying out 118% of what it was earning, however the dividend was quite comfortably covered by free cash flows at a cash payout ratio of only 70%. Given that the dividend is a cash outflow, we think that cash is more important than accounting measures of profit when assessing the dividend, so this is a mitigating factor.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 57.9%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could reach 78%, which is on the higher side, but certainly still feasible.
ENAV's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
It's comforting to see that ENAV has been paying a dividend for a number of years now, however it has been cut at least once in that time. This makes us cautious about the consistency of the dividend over a full economic cycle. The dividend has gone from an annual total of €0.176 in 2017 to the most recent total annual payment of €0.1967. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 1.9% per annum over that time. Modest growth in the dividend is good to see, but we think this is offset by historical cuts to the payments. It is hard to live on a dividend income if the company's earnings are not consistent.
ENAV May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. ENAV has seen earnings per share falling at 2.1% per year over the last five years. A modest decline in earnings isn't great, and it makes it quite unlikely that the dividend will grow in the future unless that trend can be reversed. Earnings are forecast to grow over the next 12 months and if that happens we could still be a little bit cautious until it becomes a pattern.
ENAV's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think ENAV will make a great income stock. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
