The Consensus EPS Estimates For Planetel S.p.A. (BIT:PLN) Just Fell A Lot
The latest analyst coverage could presage a bad day for Planetel S.p.A. (BIT:PLN), with the covering analyst making across-the-board cuts to their statutory estimates that might leave shareholders a little shell-shocked. Both revenue and earnings per share (EPS) forecasts went under the knife, suggesting the analyst has soured majorly on the business.
Following the downgrade, the most recent consensus for Planetel from its one analyst is for revenues of €40m in 2024 which, if met, would be a solid 14% increase on its sales over the past 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are presumed to shoot up 99% to €0.41. Before this latest update, the analyst had been forecasting revenues of €46m and earnings per share (EPS) of €0.69 in 2024. It looks like analyst sentiment has declined substantially, with a substantial drop in revenue estimates and a pretty serious decline to earnings per share numbers as well.

The consensus price target fell 6.7% to €8.40, with the weaker earnings outlook clearly leading analyst valuation estimates.
One way to get more context on these forecasts is to look at how they compare to both past performance, and how other companies in the same industry are performing. It's pretty clear that there is an expectation that Planetel's revenue growth will slow down substantially, with revenues to the end of 2024 expected to display 14% growth on an annualised basis. This is compared to a historical growth rate of 22% over the past five years. Juxtapose this against the other companies in the industry with analyst coverage, which are forecast to grow their revenues (in aggregate) 4.1% per year. So it's pretty clear that, while Planetel's revenue growth is expected to slow, it's still expected to grow faster than the industry itself.
The Bottom Line
The biggest issue in the new estimates is that the analyst has reduced their earnings per share estimates, suggesting business headwinds lay ahead for Planetel. While the analyst did downgrade their revenue estimates, these forecasts still imply revenues will perform better than the wider market. After such a stark change in sentiment from the analyst, we'd understand if readers now felt a bit wary of Planetel.
Unfortunately, the earnings downgrade - if accurate - may also place pressure on Planetel's mountain of debt, which could lead to some belt tightening for shareholders. You can learn more about our debt analysis for free on our platform here.
