Doxee S.p.A. (BIT:DOX) Stock Rockets 30% As Investors Are Less Pessimistic Than Expected
Doxee S.p.A. (BIT:DOX) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 30% gain in the last month alone. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 71% in the last year.
Even after such a large jump in price, it's still not a stretch to say that Doxee's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.1x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Software industry in Italy, where the median P/S ratio is around 1.3x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Doxee Has Been Performing
Recent times haven't been great for Doxee as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to lift, which has kept the P/S from declining. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Doxee's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 9.3% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 32% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 4.5% during the coming year according to the only analyst following the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 45% growth, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.
With this in mind, we find it intriguing that Doxee's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
What Does Doxee's P/S Mean For Investors?
Doxee appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump bringing its P/S back in line with other companies in the industry While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
Given that Doxee's revenue growth projections are relatively subdued in comparison to the wider industry, it comes as a surprise to see it trading at its current P/S ratio. When we see companies with a relatively weaker revenue outlook compared to the industry, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the moderate P/S lower. This places shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
