BasicNet S.p.A. (BIT:BAN) Investors Are Less Pessimistic Than Expected

There wouldn't be many who think BasicNet S.p.A.'s (BIT:BAN) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 14.5x is worth a mention when the median P/E in Italy is similar at about 16x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/E.

BasicNet has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings at a solid pace. It might be that many expect the respectable earnings performance to wane, which has kept the P/E from rising. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders probably aren't too pessimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Some Growth For BasicNet?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/E like BasicNet's is when the company's growth is tracking the market closely.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 9.0% gain to the company's bottom line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 36% overall rise in EPS, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 24% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.

With this information, we find it interesting that BasicNet is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as a continuation of recent earnings trends is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.

What We Can Learn From BasicNet's P/E?

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Our examination of BasicNet revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't impacting its P/E as much as we would have predicted, given they look worse than current market expectations. When we see weak earnings with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the moderate P/E lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
