How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?

For anyone who wants to understand Caltagirone's profit beyond the statutory numbers, it's important to note that during the last twelve months statutory profit gained from €29m worth of unusual items. While it's always nice to have higher profit, a large contribution from unusual items sometimes dampens our enthusiasm. When we crunched the numbers on thousands of publicly listed companies, we found that a boost from unusual items in a given year is often not repeated the next year. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. If Caltagirone doesn't see that contribution repeat, then all else being equal we'd expect its profit to drop over the current year.

Our Take On Caltagirone's Profit Performance

We'd posit that Caltagirone's statutory earnings aren't a clean read on ongoing productivity, due to the large unusual item. Therefore, it seems possible to us that Caltagirone's true underlying earnings power is actually less than its statutory profit. But at least holders can take some solace from the 67% per annum growth in EPS for the last three. Of course, we've only just scratched the surface when it comes to analysing its earnings; one could also consider margins, forecast growth, and return on investment, among other factors. Just as investors must consider earnings, it is also important to take into account the strength of a company's balance sheet. This note has only looked at a single factor that sheds light on the nature of Caltagirone's profit. But there is always more to discover if you are capable of focussing your mind on minutiae.
