Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Gruppo MutuiOnline (BIT:MOL). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

Gruppo MutuiOnline's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.

As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Gruppo MutuiOnline managed to grow EPS by 16% per year, over three years. That's a pretty good rate, if the company can sustain it.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. While we note Gruppo MutuiOnline's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 14% to €245m. That's progress.

While profitability drives the upside, prudent investors always check the balance sheet, too.

Are Gruppo MutuiOnline Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. So it is good to see that Gruppo MutuiOnline insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. Indeed, they hold €18m worth of its stock. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Despite being just 1.3% of the company, the value of that investment is enough to show insiders have plenty riding on the venture.

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. For companies with market capitalizations between €824m and €2.6b, like Gruppo MutuiOnline, the median CEO pay is around €1.4m.

Gruppo MutuiOnline offered total compensation worth €750k to its CEO in the year to . That comes in below the average for similar sized companies, and seems pretty reasonable to me. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Should You Add Gruppo MutuiOnline To Your Watchlist?

One important encouraging feature of Gruppo MutuiOnline is that it is growing profits. Earnings growth might be the main game for Gruppo MutuiOnline, but the fun does not stop there. With a meaningful level of insider ownership, and reasonable CEO pay, a reasonable mind might conclude that this is one stock worth watching.
