Lacklustre Performance Is Driving H-FARM S.p.A.'s (BIT:FARM) 39% Price Drop
The H-FARM S.p.A. (BIT:FARM) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 39%. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 44% in that time.
Following the heavy fall in price, H-FARM's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the Capital Markets industry in Italy, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 2.3x and even P/S above 6x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

How H-FARM Has Been Performing
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at H-FARM over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like H-FARM's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 44% decrease to the company's top line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 32% in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 8.9% shows it's an unpleasant look.
In light of this, it's understandable that H-FARM's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
What Does H-FARM's P/S Mean For Investors?
H-FARM's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our examination of H-FARM confirms that the company's shrinking revenue over the past medium-term is a key factor in its low price-to-sales ratio, given the industry is projected to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
