Examining Cashflow Against Gibus' Earnings

As finance nerds would already know, the accrual ratio from cashflow is a key measure for assessing how well a company's free cash flow (FCF) matches its profit. The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.

That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.

Over the twelve months to June 2024, Gibus recorded an accrual ratio of -0.12. Therefore, its statutory earnings were quite a lot less than its free cashflow. To wit, it produced free cash flow of €11m during the period, dwarfing its reported profit of €3.58m. Notably, Gibus had negative free cash flow last year, so the €11m it produced this year was a welcome improvement.

Our Take On Gibus' Profit Performance

As we discussed above, Gibus has perfectly satisfactory free cash flow relative to profit. Because of this, we think Gibus' earnings potential is at least as good as it seems, and maybe even better! On the other hand, its EPS actually shrunk in the last twelve months. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly. So while earnings quality is important, it's equally important to consider the risks facing Gibus at this point in time.
