B&C Speakers S.p.A. (BIT:BEC) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend on the 11th of May to €0.32. The announced payment will take the dividend yield to 2.4%, which is in line with the average for the industry.

B&C Speakers' Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
We aren't too impressed by dividend yields unless they can be sustained over time. Prior to this announcement, B&C Speakers' dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This indicates that a lot of the earnings are being reinvested into the business, with the aim of fueling growth.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 45.7%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 47% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2012, the first annual payment was €0.16, compared to the most recent full-year payment of €0.32. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 7.2% over that duration. It's good to see the dividend growing at a decent rate, but the dividend has been cut at least once in the past. B&C Speakers might have put its house in order since then, but we remain cautious.
B&C Speakers May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. It's not great to see that B&C Speakers' earnings per share has fallen at approximately 4.3% per year over the past five years. If the company is making less over time, it naturally follows that it will also have to pay out less in dividends. It's not all bad news though, as the earnings are predicted to rise over the next 12 months - we would just be a bit cautious until this can turn into a longer term trend.
In Summary
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think B&C Speakers will make a great income stock. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We don't think B&C Speakers is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
