Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.

Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Leonardo (BIT:LDO). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

How Fast Is Leonardo Growing?

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS) outcomes. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. Leonardo managed to grow EPS by 9.6% per year, over three years. That's a pretty good rate, if the company can sustain it.

It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. While we note Leonardo achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 3.9% to €14b. That's progress.

Are Leonardo Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

As a general rule, it's worth considering how much the CEO is paid, since unreasonably high rates could be considered against the interests of shareholders. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to Leonardo, with market caps between €3.8b and €11b, is around €2.1m.

Leonardo offered total compensation worth €1.8m to its CEO in the year to December 2021. That comes in below the average for similar sized companies and seems pretty reasonable. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when it's reasonable, that gives a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Does Leonardo Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

One positive for Leonardo is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. On top of that, our faith in the board of directors is strengthened by the fact of the reasonable CEO pay. All things considered, Leonardo is definitely worth taking a deeper dive into. Even so, be aware that Leonardo is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis , you should know about...
