While Tata Elxsi Limited (NSE:TATAELXSI) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn’t had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 11% in the last quarter. But that doesn’t change the fact that shareholders have received really good returns over the last five years. In fact, the share price is 212% higher today. We think it’s more important to dwell on the long term returns than the short term returns. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price.
While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During five years of share price growth, Tata Elxsi achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 38% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 26% average annual increase in the share price. So it seems the market isn’t so enthusiastic about the stock these days.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Tata Elxsi the TSR over the last 5 years was 227%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there’s no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
We regret to report that Tata Elxsi shareholders are down 9.5% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that’s worse than the broader market decline of 1.2%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there’s a good opportunity. Longer term investors wouldn’t be so upset, since they would have made 27%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering.
