A Closer Look At All E Technologies' Earnings

As finance nerds would already know, the accrual ratio from cashflow is a key measure for assessing how well a company's free cash flow (FCF) matches its profit. To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.

As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.

All E Technologies has an accrual ratio of 1.49 for the year to September 2023. Ergo, its free cash flow is significantly weaker than its profit. Statistically speaking, that's a real negative for future earnings. To wit, it produced free cash flow of ₹66m during the period, falling well short of its reported profit of ₹152.8m. All E Technologies shareholders will no doubt be hoping that its free cash flow bounces back next year, since it was down over the last twelve months.

Our Take On All E Technologies' Profit Performance

As we have made quite clear, we're a bit worried that All E Technologies didn't back up the last year's profit with free cashflow. For this reason, we think that All E Technologies' statutory profits may be a bad guide to its underlying earnings power, and might give investors an overly positive impression of the company. But the good news is that its EPS growth over the last three years has been very impressive. The goal of this article has been to assess how well we can rely on the statutory earnings to reflect the company's potential, but there is plenty more to consider. With this in mind, we wouldn't consider investing in a stock unless we had a thorough understanding of the risks. To that end, you should learn about the 4 warning signs we've spotted with All E Technologies (including 2 which don't sit too well with us).

Today we've zoomed in on a single data point to better understand the nature of All E Technologies' profit. But there are plenty of other ways to inform your opinion of a company.
