Waaree Energies' (NSE:WAAREEENER) Solid Profits Have Weak Fundamentals
Unsurprisingly, Waaree Energies Limited's (NSE:WAAREEENER) stock price was strong on the back of its healthy earnings report. However, our analysis suggests that shareholders may be missing some factors that indicate the earnings result was not as good as it looked.
A Closer Look At Waaree Energies' Earnings
One key financial ratio used to measure how well a company converts its profit to free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio. The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.
Waaree Energies has an accrual ratio of 1.19 for the year to March 2025. Statistically speaking, that's a real negative for future earnings. And indeed, during the period the company didn't produce any free cash flow whatsoever. Over the last year it actually had negative free cash flow of ₹1.2b, in contrast to the aforementioned profit of ₹18.7b. We saw that FCF was ₹9.6b a year ago though, so Waaree Energies has at least been able to generate positive FCF in the past.

Our Take On Waaree Energies' Profit Performance
As we discussed above, we think Waaree Energies' earnings were not supported by free cash flow, which might concern some investors. As a result, we think it may well be the case that Waaree Energies' underlying earnings power is lower than its statutory profit. But on the bright side, its earnings per share have grown at an extremely impressive rate over the last three years. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly.
