It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. Importantly, Ganesh Housing Corporation Limited (NSE:GANESHHOUC) does carry debt. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?

What Risk Does Debt Bring?

Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. As you can see below, Ganesh Housing had ₹1.42b of debt at March 2022, down from ₹4.15b a year prior. However, it also had ₹145.9m in cash, and so its net debt is ₹1.27b.

How Strong Is Ganesh Housing's Balance Sheet?

The latest balance sheet data shows that Ganesh Housing had liabilities of ₹2.24b due within a year, and liabilities of ₹790.2m falling due after that. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of ₹145.9m as well as receivables valued at ₹1.26b due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by ₹1.62b.

Given Ganesh Housing has a market capitalization of ₹27.8b, it's hard to believe these liabilities pose much threat. But there are sufficient liabilities that we would certainly recommend shareholders continue to monitor the balance sheet, going forward.

We measure a company's debt load relative to its earnings power by looking at its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and by calculating how easily its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) cover its interest expense (interest cover). The advantage of this approach is that we take into account both the absolute quantum of debt (with net debt to EBITDA) and the actual interest expenses associated with that debt (with its interest cover ratio).

Looking at its net debt to EBITDA of 0.92 and interest cover of 5.2 times, it seems to us that Ganesh Housing is probably using debt in a pretty reasonable way. So we'd recommend keeping a close eye on the impact financing costs are having on the business. Notably, Ganesh Housing's EBIT launched higher than Elon Musk, gaining a whopping 1,178% on last year. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But you can't view debt in total isolation; since Ganesh Housing will need earnings to service that debt. Considering this range of factors, it seems to us that Ganesh Housing is quite prudent with its debt, and the risks seem well managed. So the balance sheet looks pretty healthy, to us.
