A Closer Look At Sameera Agro And Infra's Earnings
In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. You could think of the accrual ratio from cashflow as the 'non-FCF profit ratio'.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
Sameera Agro And Infra has an accrual ratio of 1.24 for the year to September 2024. As a general rule, that bodes poorly for future profitability. And indeed, during the period the company didn't produce any free cash flow whatsoever. Even though it reported a profit of ₹87.3m, a look at free cash flow indicates it actually burnt through ₹1.1b in the last year. Coming off the back of negative free cash flow last year, we imagine some shareholders might wonder if its cash burn of ₹1.1b, this year, indicates high risk.

Our Take On Sameera Agro And Infra's Profit Performance
As we discussed above, we think Sameera Agro And Infra's earnings were not supported by free cash flow, which might concern some investors. As a result, we think it may well be the case that Sameera Agro And Infra's underlying earnings power is lower than its statutory profit. Sadly, its EPS was down over the last twelve months. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly.
